Web is in Boulder when a monster sighting is reported. He runs into Penny, who has lost her son.
According to a number of anecdotal sources, the miscreation made noises like an animal and moved with the speed and force of a locomotive when it wanted to. Word of mouth -- transmitted from neighbor to neighbor, from drug-store clerks to customers, from health clinic receptionists to patients who filled waiting rooms -- was that some hard-to-describe being is wreaking havoc on the countryside. And it is on a fairly straight-line trajectory to the southwest, rather opposite the standard trajectory of a tornado. The only physical evidence was what the perpetrator left behind – destruction, devastation, ruination, for lack of better words.
Apparently, though, now the real parts of the rumors had come to Boulder, hitting too close to home to be dismissed, with a force that could not be ignored. This unusually cloudy morning as Web walks away from the 7-Eleven, flames trickle out of treetops and smoke rises from three separate fires on the mountainside west of the city.
